Uttar Pradesh Government Says Senior Women Will Get Free Bus Rides for Life

The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet on Tuesday approved the ‘Lokmata Ahilyabai Matrushakti Yojana’ under which women aged 60 and above residing in the state will get free lifetime travel on all public buses operated by the Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC).

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath chaired the Cabinet meeting, and an important decision was taken to empower women and enhance their transportation facilities. With a view to honouring the commitment of ‘Sashakt Nari’ in Lok Kalyan Sankalp-2022, the State government has announced free travel for women above 60 years of age in the ordinary buses run by the Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation. The resolution will provide economic assistance to elderly women, improving their independence and ease of travel, according to an official announcement.

Under the scheme named ‘Lokmata Ahilyabai Matrushakti Yojana’, all women aged 60 and above will be able to travel for free for their lifetime on all buses run by the Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC). Women have to prove their age and identity by producing their Aadhaar card or voter ID card to avail of the benefits of the program.

The proposal approved by the cabinet anticipates that around 88,438 female passengers above the age of 60 will use the free transport service every day. The initiative is likely to have a monetary impact of ₹22.55 crore on a monthly basis.

UPSRTC will provide special smart cards to the eligible women so that they can avail of the service. The transport department will reimburse the corporation every month for the free rides availed by the eligible women passengers, the minister said. The government has also sanctioned an additional Rs 1,094.40 crore for the Women Welfare Department to boost key schemes like the Destitute Women Pension Scheme, Mukhyamantri Bal Seva Yojana, and various other measures for the safety of women and children. UPSRTC  Gift To Senior Citizen Uttar Pradesh India

UPSRTC will also issue special type smart cards to women aged 60 years and above for better implementation of the system. These cards will assist in identifying eligible travelers and allow for smoother access to free travel. Thus, for the period 2026-27, the cabinet has approved the purchase of 250 new air-conditioned electric buses for augmentation of the fleet of UPSRTC. The administration has set aside Rs 400 crore for the purchase. Out of the 250 buses, 100 will be of 50-passenger capacity, and the remaining 150 will each be of 41-passenger capacity. The total cost of acquisition is pegged at Rs 425.50 crore, and the rest, Rs 25.50 crore, will be paid by UPSRTC from its own funds.

The administration said that adding more electric buses to the fleet will help to make public transport services between Uttar Pradesh and Delhi compliant with air quality norms imposed in the National Capital Region. Find out more Travel News .
